Dr Franks and the Antmen edition by Chris Bittler Literature Fiction eBooks

When a strange string of deaths involving small men trying to lift heavy objects strikes 1950s New York City -- including a diminutive choir director crushed by his own massive organ -- Dr. Bernard Franks, explorer, scientist and inventor of the electric can opener, takes the case. But his investigation uncovers a much larger plot by a former Nazi scientist to take over the world -- starting the The Ed Sullivan Show. Can the doctor overcome his financial and father issues long enough to foil the evil professor and his four-armed army? And will he ever find love and move out of his mother's basement? The answers are yes, no and maybe, but you'll have to read to book to learn the order.

This novel is clearly a work of satire but absolutely a serious piece of writing. By serious, I mean every word is chosen for maximum wit and originality. Bittler sustains this tone throughout the novel, not letting up for even a second. The story is well-wrought and the characters vividly and hilariously drawn, but for me the main delight comes from the syntax, figurative language, and allusions that keep me constantly surprised and on the feverish edge of laughter. I didn't think I would like this book. I've never read detective fiction aside from Doyle. But Dr. Franks ended up being one of my favorite books of the year.Product details

Dr Franks and the Antmen edition by Chris Bittler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It's a great read if you're looking for a good laugh.
Dr. Franks is a really enjoyable character. He kind of reminds me of Columbo if he was played by a world-weary Orson Welles who lived in his mom's basement.
I found plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Writing style-wise, it reminds me a bit of John Cleese of Monty Python fame--clever with a bit of the absurd mixed in. Highly recommended.
